Tax and HMRC

As you may be aware, current active tax codes are the only codes that can be used and any queries regarding tax codes can only be dealt with by HMRC.

We strongly encourage employees who are concerned about the amount of tax they have paid to contact HMRC by registering for a Personal Tax Account with HMRC.

The Personal Tax Account is a new HMRC online system bringing all personal tax details into one place so that individuals can register, file, pay and update their tax information online at any time.

A Personal Tax Account enables individuals to get instant access to information and can be used for the following:

  • Claim a tax refund
  • Claim tax relief on expenses
  • Check Income Tax for the current year and previous year
  • Check your tax code
  • Check your State Pension forecast
  • See your National Insurance record
  • Manage Tax Credits and Child Benefit
  • Notify a change of address
  • Apply for Marriage Allowance
  • Track the progress of forms and opt to go paperless

As the Lead Employer Payroll team are unable to answer employee queries relating to taxation, employees are always directed to the HMRC advice line which can be very time consuming.  Employees who register for a Personal Tax Account will have the ability to access to their own records, see what information HMRC holds and have the ability to update the information direct.

A Personal Tax Account can be accessed on any device e.g. PC, tablet or smartphone.  Accessing a Personal Tax Account is really secure and takes just a few minutes to get started. Individuals will first of all need to set up a Government Gateway Account – click the following link – Government Gateway or go to

YouTube videos guide people through the service and may help if individuals struggle to access their Personal tax Account.  These can be found by searching YouTube for ‘’ account.

A series of webinars have also been developed which give step by step explanations of how to log into the Personal Tax Account and how to complete certain transactions.  Webinars can be found by searching for ‘webinars’ on GOV.UK.

HMRC also provide web-chat services for employees whilst they are online. Web-chat is a personalised service with tax experts who can provide advice and guidance about tax matters, as well as how to navigate and use the online service.

The contact number for HMRC is 0300 200 3300.
